 King Philip II (Catholic Spanish king) hated Queen Elizabeth (Protestant English queen)  Sir Francis Drake – attacked Spanish ports and was knighted for his efforts  1588 – the defeat of the Spanish Armada  Signaled the end of Spanish sea dominance  Opened the route for England to the Americas

 Sir Humphrey Gilbert – officially claimed Newfoundland for the British  Sir Walter Raleigh – sent by the Queen to explore the Americas  Attempted to settle on Roanoke Island (off NC)  John White – mapmaker on the second trip with Raleigh, father of the first English child born in America (Virginia Dare)  Traveled back to England for supplies  War with Spain delayed return  Upon return, Roanoke was deserted (only “Croatoan”)
