Sivil Toplum Diyalogu OPDIME – Open Platform for Discussing Media Ethics Open Platform For Discussing Media Ethics (OPDIME) Panel Discussion – Dec03, 2015 Thursday December 3rd, 2015 at 18.00, a panel discussion on the conditions of journalism ethics in Turkey and Sweden had been held by Reporters Without Borders as part of the OPDIME Project. The discussion was moderated by Tomas Thoren, a Swedish Journalist living in Istanbul and having a through understanding of the issues in Turkish media landscape. Meeting attended by 30 particinats consisting of local and interntional journalists/experts/academics invited by RUG Turkey's media landscape reflects a public opinion that is deeply polarized and where it’s difficult for journalists with different political alignments to find any common ground. The discussion focused on what kind of issues journalists are facing in each country and how awareness of media ethics principles can be strengthened.

Sivil Toplum Diyalogu OPDIME – Open Platform for Discussing Media Ethics Testimonials Jonathan Lundqvist, President, Reporters Without Borders "Reporters Without Borders Sweden is proud to have been able to host the seminar “Journalism Under Fire in Turkey” in December of The meeting gave us the opportunity to know more about media developments in a possible future EU country, where there are serious challenges to the freedom of the press. The seminar attracted considerable attention and drew an informed audience to the event, as well as an interview with the panelists in the most prestigious afternoon talkshow on Swedish public radio. We’re looking forward to deepening our collaboration with OPDIME in the future."

Sivil Toplum Diyalogu OPDIME – Open Platform for Discussing Media Ethics Testimonials Tomas Thoren It was truly interesting to take part of the panel discussion organized by Reportrar Utan Gränser in Stockholm December 3rd As a moderator of the event, I was espsecially happy that so many prominent Swedish journalists and other interested showed up and contributed with their comments and questions to the panel members. For example, it resulted in a quite unexpected discussion about Turkey's civil society and their relations to European countries aswell as relations to neighbouring countries in the Middle East. Gürkan Özturan The dysfunctional state of media and journalism in Turkey is of utter importance for democratization and democratic transformation of the country. During the panel discussion, it was important to give an outline of past and present situation of media, evaluate media ethics and elaborate on the possible solutions to problems of journalism specifically for Turkey and journalism at large. Perhaps one of the most important topics of discussion during the panel was about the important of creating common grounds for journalists from all sides to come together and agree on the principles that journalists will all agree and respect; and when the time comes, stand in solidarity with eachother. However, with the current media landscape -ownership of media tools- there appears certain problems as to independence of journalism. But digital innovation, social media and citizen journalism presents a new alternatives, facing all the obstacles in front of free journalism.
