“But I read it On the Internet!” Evaluating Websites Lisa C. Wallin

Is a Search Engine …. NOT a Website!

Google is like a car… Google takes you to a website where you’ll find the information you need! A car takes you where you want to go, for example … on vacation!

The National Enquirer Vs. Wikipedia The free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. “87-Year Old Woman Gives Birth to Two-Headed Alien Baby!”

What are some criteria for evaluating a website?

The Five W’s of Web Site Evaluation WHO? Who wrote the pages and are they an expert? Is a biography of the author included? Is he/she an expert? How can you find out more about the author? WHAT? What does the author say is the purpose of the site? What else might the author have in mind for the site? What makes the site easy to use? WHEN? When was the site created? Last updated? WHERE? Where does the information come from? Where can I look to find out more about the sponsor / creator? WHY? Why is this information useful for my purpose? Why should I use this information? Why is this page better than another? 2001/2003 by Kathy Schrock
