Hand Foot Mouth Disease

What is the description of hand-foot and mouth disease? Coxsackie viruses belong to a family of viruses called enteroviruses originating in the human digestive tract. Coxsackie viruses are very hardy - they are spread through saliva, for instance through coughing, or via faeces on unwashed hands and surfaces. Coxsackie viruses are a common cause of sore throats, especially for children, often in spring and summer. Typical symptoms are a fever, and sore throat and tongue in some cases. These viruses live in the gastrointestinal tract, and are therefore present in feces. They can be spread easily from one person to another when poor hygiene allows the virus within the feces to be passed from person to person. The most severe forms of coxsackie virus can be fatal, especially in newborn babies.

Where was it discovered? The virus got its name after the town where it was first discovered, Coxsackie N.Y. The A 16 refers to the strain insolated for this illness. Another related virus that can cause the H.F.M syndrome is called enterovirus 71.

what are the causes of hand-foot and mouth disease? HFM disease is more common in the summer and fall months. The viruses infect humans only and are passed in feaces. They can be spread when a person with contaminated hands touches food or objects that are put into the child's mouth. Less commonly, the viruses are passed through respiratory secretions or mouth-to-mouth contact. Factors that put a person at risk for the disease include: • age less than 5 years • crowded living conditions • poor sanitation

What are the signs and the symptoms of the disease? Rash. This appears as small red dots and small blisters on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. It also occurs on the sides of the fingers and toes, and tops of the hands and feet. The rash can form small mouth ulcers on the child's tongue and mucous membranes. The blisters are about 1/4 inch in diameter. They last about 7 to 10 days before drying up. fever. This is usually the first symptom of the disease. It comes on 3 to 6 days after the child is exposed. The level of fever ranges from about 100 to 102 degrees F. sore throat headache

Hands should also be washed well before or after eating food. Children with the disease should isolate themselves to prevent other children from getting the disease.
