Presentation transcript:

Cave Paintings Cave dwellers were the earliest artists. Colored drawings of animals, dating from about 30,000 to 10,000 B.C., have been found on the walls of caves in southern France and in Spain. Many of these drawings are amazingly well preserved because the caves were sealed up for many centuries. Early people drew the wild animals that they saw all around them. Very crude human figures, drawn in lifelike positions, have been found in Africa and eastern Spain.

Many factors have influenced the history of painting Many factors have influenced the history of painting. Geography, religion, national characteristics, historic events, the development of new materials—all help to shape the artist's vision. Throughout history, painting has mirrored the changing world and our ideas about it. In turn, artists have provided some of the best records of the development of civilization, sometimes revealing more than the written word

After World War II, the United States became the world center of painting. Arshile Gorky (1904-48) and Jackson Pollock (1912-56) were among the leaders who helped to create a new style called action painting or abstract expressionism. Instead of trying to represent specific objects, they were interested mainly in color, design, rhythm, and new ways of applying paint. Pollock experimented with flinging and dripping color on his canvases from sticks dipped into buckets of paint. Such a bold technique is just one example of the 20th-century artist's search for originality and freedom of expression. NYC

A painting always describes something A painting always describes something. It may describe the artist's impression of a scene or person. It also describes the artist's feelings about the art of painting itself.

The history of painting is a never-ending chain that began with the very first pictures ever made. Each style grows out of the styles that came before it. Every great artist adds to the accomplishments of earlier painters and influences later painters. We can enjoy a painting for its beauty alone. Its lines, forms, colors, and composition (arrangement of parts) may appeal to our senses and linger in our memories. But enjoyment of art increases as we learn when and why and how it was created.

Colors

What will you compliment? Assignment: Create a canvas painting with an interesting composition using a set of complimentary colors. Criteria: 1.Show a complimentary color theme 2.Use the entire canvas space with a balanced, intriguing composition 3. Clean lines, craftsmanship with multiple layers of paint application 4. An un-copied image that is unique to you in some way

Orange and Blue

Red and Green

Yellow and Purple

Possible Muse: Animals

Fruit, objects, or People

Can use other colors but the complimentary colors must be most dominant

I don’t want to see these types of images anymore I don’t want to see these types of images anymore. Would you want that in your house in 10 years? NO LOGOS!

Use the entire canvas to share a message, feeling, or powerful image.

Today’s Goal/Plan Create a Sketch of your Complimentary Painting Design You will need all the time you can get to work on this painting. You must work efficiently 3. Work with Mr. Black to have a canvas frame made.

Step 1: Making the Frame There is 1 x 2 in stacks of wood. Very politely ask Mr. Black and his students to help make some canvas frames. Your options sizes are: 2ft x 2ft or 3ft x 2ft

Step 2. Applying canvas Watch these video to learn how to apply canvas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUN1TOb07Fs (Skip to 4:00 minutes in, watch the cavans wrapping demo) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJBgBADmDCo 2. You don’t have to use canvas pliers if you pull tightly.

Step 3: Apply Primer to the Canvas After you assemble your canvas, apply a 3 layers of white primer (also called Gesso, which is essentially the same thing) to the front of your canvas. This will make your canvas white and your are ready to start painting your design once it’s dry. Watch the video below. Do worry about their “fancy” products. Just use the white primer paint in the gallon buckets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFw4Pn8Ks7Y
