* Born in Westfield, AL in 1931 * Son of a steelworker who played semi-pro baseball in Birmingham, and a track star for a mother * Walked at 6 months * Parents divorced when he was 3 * He lived with his father * Played semi-pro at 13 * Finished high school as a professional ball player earning $250 a month
