IMPRESSIONISM Notes Early 1860s, France. Paris was still a medieval city up until the time when Napolean III (Boneparte’s nephew) proclaims himself ruler and appoints Baron Haussmann to modernize Paris for political and aesthetic reasons. Haussmann supervises urban design of drainage, sewers, clean water, bridges, fountains, public parks to discourage revolutionary activities and uprisings. Impressionism rejects Renaissance perspective, balanced composition, idealized figures and chiaroscuro Represented immediate visual sensations through colour and light Influenced by Japanese woodblock prints that were appearing on the market was interested in the effects of light and color based on observation, not interested in politics or religion "art for art's sake" (Whistler) used broken color, rather than flat Impressionism began in France with a group of artists interested in color Claude Monet was the leader of the Impressionist movement.
