ENERGY Two main types -- kinetic and potential

KINETIC ENERGY Energy of motion Increases as mass increases Increases as speed increases

POTENTIAL ENERGY Stored energy that an object has due to its position or chemical composition Can be released at any time All matter has it Difficult to find out how much and what form of potential energy Most obvious form is energy that results from gravity

MECHANICAL ENERGY Energy that moves objects Examples -- energy used to turn a key, energy used to lift an object

SOUND ENERGY Results from the vibration of particles in a solid, liquid, or gas Cannot travel through empty space

CHEMICAL ENERGY Energy stored in the chemical composition of matter Depends on the types and arrangement of atoms in the substance

THERMAL ENERGY Total amount of energy from the movement of particles in matter Molecules are always moving

ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY Transmitted through space in the form of electromagnetic waves Can travel through empty space Include visible light, x-rays, microwaves

NUCLEAR ENERGY Energy that holds the nucleus of an atom together When nucleus breaks apart or two join, energy is released
