Women’s role in church

INTRODUCTION From the dawn of creation, man & woman were created for different roles. In Genesis 2:18 it says that God created Eve to be Adam’s “helpmeet.” This word in the Hebrew denotes: an aid; a helper fit for him; a counterpart. It does not mean that Eve was inferior to Adam; they were both equal as persons and had many things in common. But the woman was made for the man to be his aid, partner & companion. This establishes God’s design that the woman was to play a supportive role and this role was established before the fall.

INTRODUCTION After the fall and as a result of sin; God said that the husband would rule over his wife and that her desire would be to her husband (Genesis 3:16). This desire was not a good one; it meant that the woman would have a longing to possess or control the man because of sin. But remember God said the man would rule over her; meaning, the man would have dominion, reign or govern the woman. This is where the conflicting power struggle of authority began. However, one thing remains constant with God & His Word; that before the fall and after the fall, woman was never given the headship role over man as the man was the ordained head by God.

A woman is NOT to preach & teach in church 1 Corinthians 14:33-38 Vs. 34: “…keep silence…” – hold ones peace, keep close “…speak…” – talk, utter words, preach Vs. 35 states God’s disapproval of women preaching in church. God says it is a shame; in other words it is disgraceful for a woman to preach in church.

A woman is NOT to preach & teach in church 1 Timothy 2:11-15 Vs. 11: “learn in silence with all subjection” – to know or be instructed in the truth with quietness, placing herself under the obedience & tutorage of the one who is teaching. Vs. 12: “…not to teach nor usurp authority over the man…” – usurp means to act of oneself, to dominate. Women are not to assume any teaching, authoritative role in public assembly

A woman is NOT to preach & teach in church 1 Timothy 2:11-15 Vs. 13-14 gives the reasons why women should not occupy the teaching preaching role: Because God’s design of creation order is that man was created first & he is the ordained leader. Because the woman has a weaker resistance & was more easily deceived than the man

A woman is NOT to pastor or head the church 1 Corinthians11:2-9 Vs. 4: “…his head covered, dishonoureth his head.” – Head covering was a symbol of subjection & submission. So for a man to cover his head it would be an indication that he is not assuming his role as head but actually allowing the woman to lead. Vs. 5-6: “…her head uncovered, dishonoureth her head.” – If the woman does not cover her head then she is indicating that she does not submit to the man as the head. When she covers it, she is submitting to male headship & Christ’s headship.

A woman is NOT to pastor or head the church 1 Corinthians11:2-9 Vs. 7: “…he is the image & glory of God: but the woman is the glory of man.” – Man represents God as the ambassador of all creatures & exhibits the handiwork of his creator. While woman represents man as the ambassador of mankind; she represents the good nature of humanity. She is an expression of dignity & worth for humanity. Vs. 8-9: These verses state that woman was created from man and for the man & that’s the way God designed it to function: that the woman support the man as the head.

A woman is NOT to pastor or head the church Acts, 1 Timothy & Titus…assert the fundamental role of male leadership in the church. They did not give any reasons as to why men filled these roles. The books stated leadership roles such as deacons, pastors & bishops in the male gender (without explanation) naturally assuming that male headship in church was accepted by the church because it was ordained by God & confirmed & explained in other portions of Scriptures.

What roles CAN women occupy in church? Labourers & witnesses of the gospel Rom. 16:6,12; Phil. 4:3; Philemon vs. 2 ANY SERVICE OR MINISTRY THAT IS NOT EXCLUSIVE TO MAN WHICH GOD DID NOT FORBID

CONCLUSION The believing woman has a right to serve in any capacity in the church as long as it does not contradict Scripture. Such contradictory acts include usurping authority over the man or taking the place of the man’s role which God ordained. The woman HAS her place in the local church & the Bible has stipulated what those ministries entail as well as what they do not. Women should be encouraged to carry out their reasonable & acceptable service as it is well pleasing unto God.
