Why We Should Submit to Our Authorities

We submit to God’s authority structure Why We Should Submit to Our Authorities

2 I praise you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions just as I passed them on to you. 3 But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. 4 Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered disgraces his head. 5 But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered disgraces her head, for it is one and the same thing as having a shaved head. 1 Corinthians 11:2-10 (NET Bible)

6 For if a woman will not cover her head, she should cut off her hair. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, she should cover her head. 7 For a man should not have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man. 9 Neither was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for man. 10 For this reason a woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 1 Corinthians 11:2-10 (NET Bible)

“Most likely this refers to some women who are discarding a traditional ‘covering’ of some kind.” –Gordon Fee “Most likely this refers to some women who are discarding a traditional ‘covering’ of some kind.” –Gordon Fee Why We Should Submit to Our Authorities

“It seems to reflect an awareness that angels are witnesses to church life and would be particularly sensitive to resistance against God’s created order.” –NET Bible note “It seems to reflect an awareness that angels are witnesses to church life and would be particularly sensitive to resistance against God’s created order.” –NET Bible note Why We Should Submit to Our Authorities

“Whether women today in church services should wear hats depends on whether the custom of headcoverings in the first century is to be understood as a practice also intended for the present day. Many Bible students see that for today the principle of subordination (not the command to wear hats) is the key point in this passage.” –BKC Why We Should Submit to Our Authorities

11 In any case, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For just as woman came from man, so man comes through woman. But all things come from God. 1 Corinthians 11:11-12 (NET Bible)

Men and women together in mutual interdependence, complementing each other, bring glory to God. Neither should be independent or think themselves superior to the other. –BKC Men and women together in mutual interdependence, complementing each other, bring glory to God. 17 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace for him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. 16 If anyone intends to quarrel about this, we have no other practice, nor do the churches of God. 1 Corinthians 11:13-16 (NET Bible)

1 Corinthians GOOD PART Men and women are equal, & equally created in the image and after the likeness of God. Men and women are mutually interdependent, and cannot exist without the other. Men and women both pray and prophesy, presumably during the worship service. Men and women each have roles in the home and in the church, and God has clearly communicated those roles so we’re not left guessing. 19 1 Corinthians HARD PART God commands us to submit to authorities. Some of God’s authority structure is gender- driven. Every human authority or institution will be imperfect—that goes for governments, churches, husbands, and parents. Rebellion against authority is a brazen act against God.
