Transmission and transformation of motion Carry the motion over a distance And Change the type of motion
Transmission of motion A group of simple machines can work together to make a system. A system can transmit or carry the motion from one object to another. Sometimes they are close together. Sometimes they are far away.
Here are the different systems Chain and sprocket Just like on your bicycle Your feet turn and move the big sprocket then the chain carries the circular motion to the little sprocket on the back wheel and makes the bike go
Belt and pulley You pull on the rope and it carries the motion to bring in the clothes. Both pulleys turn in the same Direction. The clothes move in a straight line
gears Gears are toothed wheels They can transmit the motion and change it’s direction. Like an egg beater or a clock
Friction wheels Are a lot like gears but with no teeth They turn in opposite directions. One wheel turns the other because of the friction where they touch
Pulley systems These systems transmit rectilinear motion. You pull one rope and it goes through the pulleys and lifts a heavy object in a linear direction.
Now answer the memory questions on p 422
Types of motion There are 4 kinds of motion: Rectilinear Alternation Circular Oscillatory
Transformation of motion Is when you can change 1 kind of motion into another. You pin wheel changes circular motion in to linear motion
Here are some other systems that do that Rod and crank changes circular motion into alternation motion to Drive your car or a train
Cam and follower Changes circular motion into alternating motion the egg shaped cam is close to the rod then far from the rod as it turns
Rack and pinion Changes circular motion to rectilinear motion You turn the focus knob and the lenses go up and down on the microscope.
Screw and nut This changes circular into rectilinear motion. It can be used to lift you ceiling or squeeze or even change a tire.
