Effortful Processing – Mnemonic Devices Mnemonic Device: a sentence or word that helps us memorize a string of words or ideas. Acronyms (ROY G BIV) Acrostics – (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally) Method of Loci (Associating items with places) Pegword – “one is a bun, two is a shoe, three is a tree, four is a door, five is a hive, six is sticks, seven is heaven, eight is a gate, nine is a line, and ten is a hen.”

Using Mnemonic Devices Use a mnemonic device to remember each of the following: The first 8 presidents: Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Jackson, VanBuren) A grocery list of 10 items: milk, eggs, ice cream, lettuce, apples, Goldfish, graham crackers, Diet Coke, chicken, rice

MEMORY JOURNAL ENTRIES Date of entry Topic presented in class that may help you improve your memory Brief description of this psychological factor (To be conducted on your own using internet research) Identify and provide a brief summary of one psychological study that researched this topic in memory Explanation of specifically how you plan on using this knowledge to improve your memory in school, work, extracurricular, or everyday life. Please note this section must be specific. Discuss a specific class that you will use these strategies. Do not speak in generalities. You may be asked to write about multiple topics in each entry. I will be checking these journal entries throughout the unit. You will be graded for this assignment, and it will total 30 points (10 points per entry). Grades will be allocated based on the level of thought given to each entry, your understanding of each topic, and the impressiveness of your “memory improving strategy” for each topic that you come up with.
