ATTRACTING & RETAINING TALENT PURVI SHETH, CEO, SHILPUTSI

RAM CHARANS VIEW

Recruiting & Retaining RECRUITING & RETAINING IS A LOT LIKE PARENTING! Either you really want it and jump through hoops for it, or it just happens to you suddenly! But when it does, we consider it a “blessing”. You need to be flexible, energetic, understanding ( and rich) for the incumbent! You need to prepare for lots of worrying and being patient under the most exasperating circumstances You need to know yourself really well before you guide or lead this new person in your life! BE READY FOR A WHOLE NEW EVOLUTION…

media and internet influence - technology taken for granted attitude to risk & reward they think bigger luxuries are necessary indisciplined or respond to different cues? perspective on seniority goal oriented – task oriented exhibit traits of responisibility & focus differently parent child reltnp change – manifested with employers too– less fear, more openness & friendship Young talent Today

What people want Today’s employees expect more than a job and a paycheck: they expect meaningful work; they expect to be challenged; they want to see the “big picture” and know where they fit in; they require expectations and guidance; they want to contribute; they demand feedback; they crave on-going training (education). provide leadership – not opportunity for subordination they respond to emotion & gurus they emulate – but they must see something in it for them fixed pay – they still want that! but i live in a lot more insecure world – fire me tomorrow or give me a larger share of the upside.

Key Drivers to attract & Retain talent – big firms PROCTER AND GAMBLE INDIA Early responsibilities in career Flexible and transparent organizational culture Global opportunities through a variety of exposure and diverse experiences Performance Recognition

GLAXO SMITH KLINE CONSUMER HEALTHCARE Performance-driven Rewards Its belief in “Growing our own timber” Comprehensive development and learning programs Flat organization, where performance could lead to very quick progression Challenging work context Competitive rewards Exhaustive induction and orientation program

Attracting & retaining talent – Small Businesses The best ways to attract and retain talent in small firms is to sell to prospective and existing employees the advantages of working in the small firm vis-à-vis large organizations. Possible advantages include: a non-bureaucratic set up with more interaction and closer relationship with leaders and owners opportunity for greater recognition and ownership of achievements. New recruits in large organizations usually have to toe the line or follow well entrenched seniors

Talent for small businesses job enrichment, or more breadth in their jobs as opposed to specialized nature of jobs in large enterprises. Job diversity and the possibility of tailoring the job based on the individual rather than rigid job specifications opportunity to reach the top quickly and fast, if the company grows fast possibility of flexible work arrangements possibility of a more cohesive workforce and a family or club-like work atmosphere due to the small size of the workforce

PIXAR ANIMATION STUDIOS Acquired by steve Jobs in 1986 – he retained the founders & became chairman Started focus on Animation Pixar had a non conventional way of managing people Pixar was known as “anti corporate” People even came at lunch time, brought pets to work and came barefoot..

PIXAR No employment contracts People centred model – not computer centered ( “we are all in this together”) Culture of Innovation “Hire people better than who we are” No hero culture – team orientation PIxar University Structure had parallel interactive groups

GROUP ACTIVITY USING THE MATERIAL PROVIDED - MAKE A CHART TO REPRESENT YOUR COMPANY AS A GREAT PLACE TO WORK FOR POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES. FIND A GOOD PLACE IN THE ROOM TO DISPLAY IT SO IT CATCHES THE EYE OF POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES…* *the white board and screen are out of bounds

Leadership & team Check your leadership effectiveness in skills needed to retain talent: Rate yourself 1-5 (5 being outstanding) Do you fully cooperate with all of your staff to find win-win solutions? Do you give credit and acknowledgment without fail to those deserving? Do you regularly encourage, support and contribute to your staff's success? Do you often increase your staff's responsibilities and opportunities? Do you frequently provide training and learning opportunities for staff? Do you treat all staff with dignity and respect as you do your best customer? Do you encourage creativity and seek candid feedback from staff?

THANK YOU
