Supporting your ELs (English Learners) English Language Development Teachers: Dana Swanson, Courtney Tanguma AP: Anitra Gallegos

Agenda and EU and EQ Agenda: – Academic Vocabulary – WIDA Can Do Descriptors – Individual Student Meetings – WIDA Language Proficiency Standard Expectations by Content – Content Area Planning – Resources – EQ: How can you facilitate English development for an ELL in any content area? – EU: With differentiation and scaffolding ELLs can develop English skills in any content area.

Academic Vocabulary – ESL: English as a Second Language – ELL or EL: English Language Learner or English Learner – ELD: English Language Development – SIOP: Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol

WIDA Can Do Descriptors – Formative or Summative Framework – The ‘Can Do Descriptors’ can help you understand what your EL will be able to do without scaffolding – You are trying to move them into the next level

Learn About Your EL Student Groupings – For those of you who were invited I have written down on a Name Chart where your students are based off their language scores – If you have more than one student go with the one you think is struggling the most in your class – If you do not have an ELL choose a group to join – Group up with the teachers who you share a student with – Introduce yourself to one another – Look at their levels and discuss the following questions: – What has your student been struggling with? – Looking at the social and instructional language framework: How do you think as a team of teachers you could meet this specific student’s needs?

What are some ideas you came up with for your student? – Tell us the level of your student – Give an idea of what could be done to help that student

Reaching ELs in the Content Area – Write down the name of your student and their levels on your sticky note – Now you will break up into your content areas – For elective courses think about what core content is most relevant in your course and work with them – As a group look at the English Language Proficiency Standards – Choose a topic you specifically teach analyze where your student is at – Collaborate with your content team to determine what you could to scaffold and differentiate for your student to reach the next level of understanding

What are some ideas you came up with for your topic? – Tell us the topic you chose – Give an idea of how you can differentiate for your ELs

Resources for Differentiation for ELs – Formative and Summative Differentiation for Els by their Language Level: – – Best Practices from Edutopia – SIOP – Graphic Organizers – Visuals when giving Vocabulary – Adjusted reading schedule& Guided Reading – Advice on grammar, spelling, and making corrections – Courtney and myself are always here to talk with you, help you

Are there any questions?
