CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 2 Outline LHC  CMS  ECAL ECAL DCS mission, functionality, challenges Subsystems overview DCS prototyping – ECAL testbeams Current status, plans DCS = Detector Control System

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 3 LHC  CMS  ECAL LHC

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 4 LHC  CMS  ECAL LHC P5

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 5 LHC  CMS  ECAL ECAL LHC ECAL: Lead-Tungstate crystals ECAL: Lead-Tungstate crystals P5

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 6 ECAL DCS mission Control actions: switch on/off and ramp up/down the HV and LV, set up their operational parameters. Early warnings about abnormal conditions and alarms, hardwired interlocks to ECAL HV/LV and CMS DSS. Monitoring of the detector conditions, on-detector electronics and ECAL subsystems. Recording of monitored data to the common CMS "conditions database".

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 7 ECAL DCS interactions ECAL DCS receives commands from CMS DCS (CMS operational mode) or from ECAL “Run Control” (ECAL local operational mode, commissioning)

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 8 ECAL DCS functionality & layout

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 9 ECAL DCS challenges Data rates and volume: ~120’000 of channels and parameters to monitor; ~10 Mbytes/hour raw data rates; ~1.5 Gbytes/month to archive in the CMS conditions database System availability: All of the DCS functionality must be constantly available during the ECAL (CMS) run time; some functionality practically non-stop (24h/365d) during the whole CMS detector life time (more than 10 years). Specific challenges for ECAL Safety System (ESS) and ECAL Precision Temperature and Humidity Monitoring (PTM/HM)…

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 10 more challenges – ESS, PTM/HM ECAL Safety System (ESS) and the ECAL Precision Temperature and Humidity Monitoring (PTM/HM): –sensors will work in high radiation and magnetic fields (~ neutrons/cm2 of total flux over the CMS life cycle; 4 Tesla). –sensors are not foreseen to be replaceable and even accessible. –readout electronics must be radiation tolerant, since it will be placed in the CMS cavern. –long cable paths (50-100m) “sensors – readout electronics”. PTM: monitors the cooling system stability (<0.1°C at 18°C) with a (relative) precision 0.01°C.

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 11 more challenges – ESS, PTM/HM UXC55 – CMS cavern USC55 – electronics cavern

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 12 DCS Hardware ECAL DCS team is responsible for delivery and support of hardware for ESS and PTM/HM subsystems (sensors, readout electronics, PLC). Hardware for HV, LV, Cooling and Laser subsystems is provided and supported by other ECAL teams while software is our responsibility. ECAL DCS will use several dedicated computers (“industrial PC”) which are to be installed in the CMS electronics cavern.

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 13 DCS software The purpose of the JCOP Framework is to provide LHC experiments with a unified toolset for building their DCS. Basically the Framework provides standard “devices”, “control units”, tools for hierarchical structuring of controls, DB access tools, etc. More details – a separate talk at the Conference, WE2 session The JCOP Framework uses a commercial SCADA system, PVSS-2, from ETM (Austria). ECAL DCS software (as well as the CMS DCS one) is based on a Framework, common for all LHC experiments. The Framework is developed by JCOP (Joint Controls Project).

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 15 Controls hierarchy – 1-st implementation, ECAL testbeam, 2004 HV Cooling ECAL DCS Supervisor ESS PTM HM LV

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 16 Current status Sensor production, calibration, installation in SMs (ESS, PTM/HM). Readout electronics development (ESS, PTM/HM); production (end 2005 – PTM/HM, beg 2006 – ESS). Software development: towards the final DCS (DB access, integration with CMS DCS, etc); new applications (on-detector electronics parameters monitoring). Support of running installations: ECAL cosmic calibration (H4 testbeam area, B.887); ECAL integration center (B.867 – 3x independent setups). New setup in Feb 2006 – CMS MTCC (Magnet test / Cosmic Challenge)

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 17 ECAL DCS setups: 2 installations are running, one more in 2006 ECAL integration center (B.867, CERN-Prevessin) -- 3x separate SM integration stands with 3x DAQ/DCS; -- 3x ECAL SM per month (fall 2005). ECAL cosmic calibration (B.887, CERN-Prevessin) CMS MTCC – 2006 (P5, Cessy)

CMS ECAL DCS 10.Oct S.Zelepoukine ICALEPCS CMS ECAL DCS 18 Major milestones and plans 2000 –First prototypes in ECAL testbeams, looking for solutions 2004(sensors, readout), irradiation studies – The first fully functional prototype tested in ECAL testbeam – ECAL cosmics calibration, ECAL integration. Final electronics development, sensors installation – CMS MTCC (integration with CMS DCS), ECAL cosmics/testbeam calibration, ECAL integration. Electronics production, installation in CMS cavern, tests. Scaling up the software for the final ECAL configuration –Ready for operation, commissioning.
