G. Dissertori ETHZ CMS Electronics 2002 1 ECAL Detector Control System : Status Report G. Dissertori ETHZ 17.10.2002

G. Dissertori ETHZ CMS Electronics 2002 2 ECAL Electronics, DCS Outline News The M0’ experience Current activities Plans/Next Conclusions

G. Dissertori ETHZ CMS Electronics 2002 3 ECAL Electronics, DCS Specification document finally released (today) collected comments from P. Bloch and from the members of the DCS group circulate now inside the collaboration Deputy project leader would like to propose Serguei Zelepoukine from IHEP Protvino as Deputy Project Leader News

G. Dissertori ETHZ CMS Electronics 2002 4 ECAL Electronics, DCS Excellent work done by S. Zelepoukine and the Belgrade group Precision Temperature Monitoring we can achieve the precision required The ATLAS ELMB is a viable backup solution for the readout system if placed not too close to the detector Safety system A safety system with interlocks to the HV/LV has been built and operated discovered large sensitivity of the PLC to the environmental noise --> to be propagated to JCOP/ITCO PVSS on Windows: not yet as stable as we would like... no interface yet to the DAQ The M0’ experience

G. Dissertori ETHZ CMS Electronics 2002 5 ECAL Electronics, DCS Sensor issues Humidity sensors : together with Tracker DCS group a large number of possible sensor types is currently evaluated, tested, irradiated etc. Specifications (chosen sensor) hopefully by end of the year. Pressure/flow meters : together with Tracker DCS group and Frank Glege we are elaborating a little requirements document in order to start a discussion/collaboration with the cooling people. We would like that they choose and install the sensors, and that we take care of the read out and safety actions. Current activities

G. Dissertori ETHZ CMS Electronics 2002 6 ECAL Electronics, DCS RBFE board Two technicians from Protvino together with the LHC-ACR group study and test of the RBFE (Resistance Bridge Front End) board for sensor excitation and signal conditioning before sending over long signal cable want to combine this with a MUX --> investigations of MUX candidates (issue : radiation hardness) Current activities...

G. Dissertori ETHZ CMS Electronics 2002 7 ECAL Electronics, DCS Lab test of Keithley readout system Student from ETH together with W. Lustermann and S. Zelepoukine Current activities... study of cascaded MUXing system analysis of switching time limits ---> current limit coming from the RBFE board analysis of signal precision over long cable (120m) test will be carried on by a further ETH PhD student

G. Dissertori ETHZ CMS Electronics 2002 8 ECAL Electronics, DCS Software ETH student (Alison Lister) has started to work on software framework, as well on first PVSS set-up for the temperature monitoring will also look into the communication with XDAQ and databases Cabling Serguei has started to discuss with the CMS Integration group about the cabling layout for DCS : Current activities....

G. Dissertori ETHZ CMS Electronics 2002 9 ECAL Electronics, DCS ECAL DCS cabling and front-end electronics layout Counting room CMS Barrel Endcap Barrel Electronics

G. Dissertori ETHZ CMS Electronics 2002 11 ECAL Electronics, DCS Irradiation tests plan to go with a small group to PSI (end of Nov) in order to do irradation tests of the RBFE board components SM0 integration test we start ordering items bring some of the M0’ setups back to B27 to be used there for those tests Plans/Next

G. Dissertori ETHZ CMS Electronics 2002 12 ECAL Electronics, DCS Overall good momentum My worries will be difficult to keep this momentum over the winter months, since the main actors will not be at CERN or be overloaded with other duties have to well define the activities which can be carried out in the home labs DCS for Preshower : need urgently resources A question has anybody in CMS in general thought about the issue of Galvanic isolation (detector - counting house) for the DCS system?? Conclusions
