What is the design process?

I will know how to conduct an investigation using the design process

1. The design process: a step-by- step method used to solve a problem 2. Research: to look for facts about something 3. Prototype: the first working product that uses a design Vocabulary Words Write them in your science notebook

When people design something new, they follow the steps of the design process. People use the design process to find a solution.

Think about the designs of these televisions. What problem does the new design solve? It’s lighter, thinner, brighter, in color and is remote controlled!

Can you think of any other kinds of technology that has changed to solve problems??

Telephone/Cell phone GPS Computers/Laptops Cars Some examples would be:

The design process allows engineers to produce and test possible solutions.

The design process has 8 steps! Step 1: Identify the problem Step 2: Do research Step 3: Develop possible solutions Step 4: Choose one solution Step 5: Design and construct a prototype Step 6: Test the prototype Step 7: Communicate results Step 8: Evaluate and redesign

Let’s read pages to learn more about the design process Don’t forget to answer the questions on each page!

EXIT TICKET Why do engineers test their prototypes many times?
