Lesson 19

Today’s Agenda 1. ITW 1. Discuss 6 and 7 2. Quiz over 6 and 7 3. Epigraphs ~analyze an author’s use of epigraphs ~understand how writers use multiple sources of information to develop their subjects

Into the Wild Discussion

Discussion Questions  Is Christopher McCandless selfish or self-reliant? Explain.  To what extent is being comfortable and happy a deterrent to risk-taking?  “So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit with in a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure” (57).

Epigraphs

 What is an epigraph?  Quotation at the beginning of a book, a chapter, or a section of a book.  How is it used in literature?  May serve as preface, a summary, a counter-example, or to link the work to a bigger picture  Look at the epigraphs Krakauer includes.  Paraphrase the epigraph.  Explain how it connects to the chapter. PARAPHRASE OF EPIGRAPHCONNECTION TO THE CHAPTER

Read and annotate chapter 8 (pages 70-85) for Lesson 21
