MARY MCLEOD BETHUNE Education I leave you a thirst for education. Knowledge is the prime need of the hour. If I have a legacy to leave my people, it is my philosophy of living and serving.

Why was Mary Mcleod Bethune important in history? What was she fighting for? She was fighting for education for all people, especially girls.

What social barriers, restrictions, and obstacles did she have to overcome? HOW did she overcome these? Denied the right to go on a mission trip to educate others, so she opened her own school so no girl could be denied an education. Needed desks & workers to build her school, so she begged for help and built desks from trash. Student denied proper health care, so she opened a hospital

Led the National Association of Colored Women’s Club Founded the National Council of Negro Women The first African American head of a federal agency Inducted in The National Women’s Hall of Fame The first woman and first African American to be recognized with a statue in Washington D.C.
