Emergency Evacuation Plans Medical Chat for the Clinic Environment

Conditions in which evacuations are necessary  Man-made conditions: - Fires - Explosions - Toxic Material Releases - Civil Disturbances - Workplace Violence  Natural Conditions: - Floods - Tornados - Hurricanes - Earthquakes

Alarms  Audible Alarms: - Bells - Sirens - Horns - Workplace Announcement Systems  Visual Alarms: - Flashing Steady Lights - Strobe Lights (most effective visual)

Routes and Exits  Exit routes should be: - Clearly marked and well lit. - Wide enough to accommodate the number of evacuating personnel. - Unobstructed and clear of debris at all times. - Unlikely to expose evacuating personnel to additional hazards.  Not all emergencies require an exit out of a building.

Gathering Points  Designate assembly areas or areas, both inside and outside your workplace, where employees should gather after evacuating.  Take a head count after the evacuation. Accounting for all employees following an evacuation is critical.  Establish procedures for further evacuation in case the incident expands. This may consist of sending employees home by normal means or providing them with transportation to an offsite location.
