Chapter 17 The Fall of the Kingdom of the Anti-Christ

7 Common themes of Babylon as a city 2.Babylon as a woman/prostitute 3.Kings prostitute themselves with her 4.Drunkenness 5.Burning of Babylon with fire 6.The judgment of the prostitute 7.The blood of the saints

The Beast (Chapter 13) = ______________________________ The Anti-Christ T he Prostitute = _______________________________ (See verse 18) Babylon (Rome)

A description of the prostitute 1) Dressed in purple and scarlet 2) Wearing gold and jewelry 3) Had significant adulterous relationships 4) Holding a golden cup containing her sins 5) Drunk on the blood of God’s HOLY people

This description and the designation of the seven hills (verse 9) and the great city that rules over the kings of the earth (verse 18) have led some to suggest that the Papacy is referred to here.

John’s use of literary devices 1) Parallelism 1 Prostitution/Adultery Commonly referenced in the OT prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Hosea to describe Israel’s __________. idolatry

John’s use of literary devices 1) Parallelism 2 Peoples, multitudes, nations and languages (vs. 15) – here representing the minions of the Anti-Christ Used many times previously in Revelation referring to God’s people and those in heaven

John’s use of literary devices 2) Contrast Female characters Prostitute/harlot – negative Mother (12:1-6) and Bride (21:2) – both positive

Seven kings – vs. 10 Will not try and interpret this – lots of speculations surrounding it. One commentator said that it referred to seven kinds of governments that Rome had over its history.

Ten kings – vs These may be the puppet leaders that the anti-Christ puts into place it. Only one purpose (vs. 13) to give their power and authority to the beast to wage war against God and the armies of heaven

Chapter 18 Songs for and about Fallen Babylon

Outline of Chapter 18 vs. 1-3 – The angel’s lament vs. 4-8 – A warning to escape judgment vs – Three Woes The kings of the earth The merchants The sea captains and sailors vs. 20 – Heaven’s song of rejoicing vs – The finality of Babylon’s fall

The Angel’s Lament (1-3) Another mighty angel – (Lucifer’s replacement) Recounting of Babylon’s sins –Dwelling place for demons –The haunt of the unclean –Adulteries (idolatry) –Greediness –Pride (vs. 7)

The Warning to Escape (vs. 4-8 God has remembered her sins so escape while you can Judgment will be swift – in one day (vs. 8)

The Threefold Woes (vs. 9-19) Common Themes of three woes –Those pronouncing the woes will “stand far off” and cry (vs. 10, 15, and 17) –Weeping and mourning (vs. 9, 15, and 19) –“In one hour…” (vs. 10, 17, and 19) Pronounced by those who had profited from dealing with Rome 1) Kings of the Earth 2) Merchants 3) Sea captains and Sailors

Heaven’s Song of Rejoicing God has judged based on how Babylon judged God’s people –Apostles – most were martyred by Rome

The Finality of Babylon’s Fall City will never be found again No more music/partying No more trades practiced – including the millstone No more lighting of lamps No more marriages More sins recounted –Led all nations astray with magic spells – Murdered God’s prophets and holy people
