By: Rachel Caudill

 He also the brother of Zeus, and Poseidon.  He’s the god of the underworld, ruling over all dead, and also the god of wealth due to all the metals in the Earth.  Hades has three children; The Erinyes, Zagreus, and Makaria.  He is the son of Cronus and Rhea.

 Hades is a Greek god who runs the Underworld.  Hades is also known as The Unseen God.  The name Hades is generally applied to the realm of the Underworld: Hades = Hades' realm.  Hades was a son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. His brothers are Zeus and Poseidon. Hestia, Hera, and Demeter are Hades' sisters.

 Hades is the God of the Underworld.  Hades is not the god of death, however -- that's Thanatos. Hades rules those given proper funeral rites and brought over to the other side by Charon.

 Hades became as absolute an authority in the Underworld as Zeus was in the sky. Fiercely protective of his own rights, he claimed ownership of all metals and gems below the surface of the earth.  The most private of all gods, Hades did not welcome "visitors" and rarely let anyone who entered the Underworld leave again. Cerberus, a vicious, three-headed watchdog, stood guard at the locked gate, making sure the dead remained in the Underworld.

 For this reason, men feared and loathed the fierce lord of the Underworld. Indeed, he became so closely associated with the darkness and horror of the Underworld that the place itself eventually came to be called simply Hades  Though he was cold and grim, he was neither vicious nor evil. True, he oversaw all punishments of the dead mandated by the gods, but most of these tortures were carried out by the Erinyes (Furies). In lording over the dead, he was simply doing his job. Nonetheless, mortals were reluctant to speak his name or his somewhat longer title, Aidoneus, the "Unseen One“ for fear of attracting his attention.

 He usually shows up in Greek Mythology.  Hades also mostly shows up in books or literature about a horrible persons death or in any Greek Mythology setting.

 Hades has a three headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld.  He is known as the “Unseen one”.  Hades had gloomy features. He had a beard and dark hair falling over his brow.

 Hades expressed his desire for the beautiful daughter of his sister, Demeter... Zeus, as the father of Persephone did not object to the romance and did not interfere when Hades decided to abduct Persephone and hide her in the Underworld.  Hades if often mistaken with the Roman God Pluto.
