Sensation and Perception 3 Introduction to Psychology Unit 2

Bellringer: POP QUIZ On the next slide, are a bunch of words that you have NEVER EVER seen before in your entire life. I will randomly select students in the room to read each sentence and tell me what it means – even though they have never seen the words before in their entire life. If you can’t read it, you fail.

Think… Do we perceive the word based on its “parts” or as a “whole?”

Today We will learn about the different types of perception according to Gestalt principles, and why we perceive things the way we do

Gestalt Laws of Perception: humans naturally perceive stimuli in groups or try to make them a “whole.”

Proximity: We group things that are close

Proximity

Similarity: we group things that look the same

Continuity: we group things so lines continue

Continuity

Closure: we group things to form complete shapes

Gestalt Laws of Perception These laws of perception are very useful in graphic design, advertising and art. How do we know that there are 2 groups (words)? Arrow?

Group Practice

Which Gestalt Law of Grouping explains why we perceive a fox? 1.Similarity 2.Continuity 3.Closure 4.Proximity

Group Practice Which Gestalt Law of Grouping explains why we perceive the number 2? 1.Similarity 2.Continuity 3.Closure 4.Proximity

Group Practice Which Gestalt Law of Grouping explains why we perceive the lines CD and AB together? 1.Similarity 2.Continuity 3.Closure 4.Proximity

Group Practice Which Gestalt Law of Grouping explains why we perceive the Adidas's logo to be 1 entity? 1.Similarity 2.Continuity 3.Closure 4.Proximity

Independent Practice Which Gestalt law is at work here? WHY do we perceive a peacock in the white space in the middle?

Independent Practice Which Gestalt Law is at work here? Why does each section seem separate?

Independent Practice Which Gestalt Law of Perception is at work here? Why do we perceive a triangle of circles in the middle of the triangles?

Exit Ticket (on a separate sheet of paper to turn in) What do the Gestalt Laws say about our perception of the world? What are the 4 Gestalt laws? Define each

Independent Project Design a logo for “PSYCHOLOGY” that uses one or ALL of the Gestalt Laws (DUE _____) 321 SimilarityDrawing and definition are clear and accurate Drawing and definition are present but inaccurate Missing drawing or definition, or both are inaccurate Proximity Closure Continuity Effort and Appearance Neat, clear effort and readable Messy or evidently moderate effort Messy and lack of effort is evident
