Aim: What are other principles of perception?
2
Gestalt Psychology A. Basic Ideas: 1. Perception is instantaneous 2. Psychological phenomena can best be understood when viewed as a whole (gestalt=whole) 3. “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts”
3
Gestalt Principles: Figure/ground: When we look at a scene we instantly get a feeling of figure and ground
14
Principles of Grouping
Closure: We fill in the gaps to create a complete, whole object
15
Similarity: Objects that are similar in appearance are more likely to be perceived to be in the same group
16
Continuity: Objects that create a continous form (such as a trail) are likely to be perceived as belonging in the same group
17
Proximity: Objects that are close together are more likely to be perceived as belonging in the same group
20
Human Factors Factors that are uniquely human and may hinder or aid our behaviors “Human factors psychologists help to design appliances, machines, etc. that harness rather than confound our natural perceptions.” -Meyers
