OBJECTIVE #1: Describe the factors that influence wind. OBJECTIVE #2: DISTINGUISH BETWEEN LOCAL AND GLOBAL WINDS AND LOCATE THE MAJOR WIND BELTS.

1.WIND: The horizontal movement of air from an area Of high pressure to an area of low pressure. 2. Winds are caused by differences in air pressure. 3.Wind direction: Measured with a wind vane. Wind speed: Measured with an anemometer. 4.Wind Chill Factor: The increased cooling that a wind Can cause. 5.Local Winds: Blow over short distances – Caused by Unequal heating of Earth’s surface within a small area.

6.Sea Breeze: A wind that blows from an ocean or lake To the land. 7.Land Breeze: The flow of air from land to a body of Water. 9.Global Winds: Winds that blow steadily from a specific Direction over long distances. The movement of air Between the equator and the poles create global winds.

10.Coriolis Effect: The way the Earth’s rotation makes Winds curve. 11.The major global wind belts are the trade winds, Prevailing westerlies, and polar easterlies. 12.Doldrums: There is very little horizontal motion, so the Winds near the equator are very weak. Regions near the Equator with little or no wind are called Doldrums. 13.Horse Latitudes: 30* N and 30*S Latitude the air stops Moving toward the poles and sinks. This creates an area Of calm. 14.Latitude: distance from the equator, measured in Degrees.

15.Trade Winds: Between 30*N and 30*S Latitudes and the Equator. Northern Hemisphere: They blow Northeast Southern Hemisphere: They blow Southeast *These helped sailors carry cargoes to South America 16.Prevailing Westerlies: Play and important part in the Weather of the United States. P.W. Blow from the Southwest between 30*-60* N Latitudes P.W. Blow from the northwest between 30*-60* S Latitudes 17.Polar Easterlies: Has a major effect on weather changes In the U.S. Located 60*N & S latitudes to the poles.

18.Jet Streams: Bands of high speed winds ( KM per hour) That are about 10 KM above Earth’s surface.
