Winds Chapter 2 Section 3 Pages #46-52

What is wind? Air is a fluid = move easily from place to place Differences in air pressure cause the air to move. Wind: horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of lower pressure.

Measuring Wind Describe by direction & speed Wind Vane= Wind Direction – Ex: South wind blows form the south toward the north Anemometer= Wind Speed – The force of the wind against the cups turn the axle

Measuring Wind Wind-Chill Factor The stronger the wind, the colder you feel “The temperature outside is 20 degrees Fahrenheit. But with a wind speed of 30 miles per hour, the wind-chill factor makes it feel like 1 degree above zero.”

Local Winds Local winds: Winds that blow over a short distance Local winds are caused by the unequal heating of Earth’s surface within a small area. Only form when large scale winds are weak

Sea Breeze

Land Breeze

Global Winds Global winds: winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances. Global winds are created by the unequal heating of Earth’s surface. Occur over a large area.

Global Convection Currents Temperature differences between the equator and the poles produce giant convection currents in the atmosphere.

The Coriolis Effect As wind blows, Earth rotates from west to east underneath them, making it seem as if the winds have curved Winds in the Northern Hemisphere gradually turn toward the right Winds in the Southern Hemisphere turn toward the left

Global Wind Belt The major global wind belts are the trade winds, the polar easterlies, and the prevailing westerlies.

Jet Stream Bands of high speed winds Generally blow west to east
