Visual Brainstorming

Critters Worksheet

Supporting the development of creative thinking… The steps taken in the beginning of this lesson support the development of creative thinking in students by following the stages of the creative process described by Wallas (1926) cited by Dinham (2011 p.36) which include preparation, incubation, illumination and verification. By getting students to complete visual brainstorming activity they are in the preparation stage of the creative process, “becoming acquainted with the challenge” (Dinham, 2011, p.36) by gathering information and ideas that will be useful. As the children create various animal designs using their creative brainstorming, they are taking part in the incubation stage, which involves unrefined investigation of all potential solutions. These possibilities are then sketched to create four images which help in selecting the best one to use in the verification stage. Having the creative process broken down into an instructional story, allows children to unknowingly complete the progression and create a unique artwork that is an outcome of imaginative thinking.
