Genre of Thriller Genre is how we classify movie types. They can also be an element of sub-genre to make the film more interesting. A thriller movie is suppose to bring thrills the audiences enjoyment. This is because the director wants you to enjoy the movie while exploring what it has to offer. The audience should expect surprises and to be scared while watching a thriller movie. An example from scary movie, the audience are given surprises along the comedic elements.

Timeline Nosferatu March 1922 was the first ever horror movie to be made with thriller as a sub genre Safety Last April 1923 it was the first ever thriller made directed by Fred C. Newmeyer. The Lodger 1927 – based on the serial killer Jack the ripper directed by Alfred Hitchcock PSYCHO directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1959 it is a horror/thriller Cape Fear 1962 directed by J lee Thompson a psychological thriller film, it was based on a novel. ABBOT and COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN 1962 the film is a comedy/thriller directed by Charles Barton Scary movie1962 directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans is a Horror/thriller it has gone to make a franchise. Scream 1966 directed by Wes Craven is a Horror/Thriller/Slashe film. The Sixth Sence 1966 directed by N. Night Shayamalan is a psychological thriller with subgenre of drama, and mystery

Narrative A) Most narratives follows a structure of Equilibrium, Disequilibrium and then a new equilibrium. A mainstream film would follow the structure from Torodov or Prop. For example 28 days later equilibrium broke but in the end they had a new equilibrium because of the virus has disappeared C) A thriller movie is most likely to have low key lighting. The setting is most likely to be in an uncivilised location or secluded. The film will have shadows in dark areas. The costume will representing the character and their role in the narrative. I believe the props differ in he way of the sub genre of the thriller but the iconography will be blood and icons of death. For example in Seven title sequence the low key lighting contrast with the light to make a shadow atmosphere giving the character an unknown status. B)In a thriller a hero is most likely to go through transfiguration to over- overcome the antagonist. The hero becomes strong as he/she gains strength in the narrative. In seven Brad Pitt the protagonist find a way to take down the antagonist by confrontation. The anti hero is there to confuse the audience leaving enigmas for who the main hero will be. The anti hero in Dirty harry Clint wood is just there to die.

Thriller camera work Close Ups – close up can hide films elements and also mostly used to show emotions. In seven the CU of hands hides the antagonist identity leaving the spectator with enigmas in the opening sequence. Medium Shot – They are used to show facial expressions also the figure structure for the portrayal of the character about how they feel in a certain situation. Seven the antagonist confronted as he surrenders it is a mid shot. Long shots – can be used as revealing shots not only making the character the central focusing point but revealing the location and other characters. Also the character can have more space in the frame Low angle shots – low angle shots gives the actor power over the spectator and also can be used as POV shots from another characters viewing point. Establishing shots – are mostly used to set the location and scene. They can be done in several ways such as LS or Arial shots to reveal such things such as the place and time. The drive opening sequence uses establishing shots to let you know the main actor likes to drive at night leaving enigmas for the audience. Extreme close Ups – They are used to get extremely close to the character. ECU are tense at times because they appear from nowhere and can make the spectator feel uncomfortable, In Donnie Brasco the opening sequence shows has the close up of Jonny Depp looking at the antagonist the shot makes the audience want Jonny Depp is looking at Point of view shots – Physco uses POV shots as Alfred Hitchcock played around with the shower head and the women's head also while producing a graphic match. The POV shots makes the spectator experience what the character in the scene is experiencing.

Editing Juxtapose- using the next shot with a meaning that can leave the audience with enigmas or answers Continuity editing - continuing the shot in a different frame. Fade to black – putting an effect could be to empathise the mind set. This are transitions edited in the edit suit. Cross over shot – building suspense with the same action happening. In batman the camera shows batman fighting the antagonist then cuts to a group of people fighting and concetrates on batman. Jump cut- gives an effect of the camera jumping around it breaks the continuity flow of editing. Freeze frame- freezing the action, this can be done after a dream to emphasise the pint. Reverse shot- mostly done to characters having a conversation and you switch the position depending on whose talking. For example the sexy beast uses reverse shots for their conversation in the restaurant. The reverse shots should break the 180 degree rule otherwise it shows confusion to the spectator.

Sound track The sound in thriller movies are dependably if they modern or classic. The classic thrillers used a lot of orchestral with distorted sound effects. In the modern sound effects are easier to add on after the production has complete. The sound can be diegetic which is sound track edited on or non diegetic sounds we hear every day. The sound track may also connect to the subgenre in the film for example if there is romance we could expect a romantic sound track. Thriller music has changes over the past few years with how in Psyco (,Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) using high pitch sound track to build suspense or mystery for the audience to stay alert. The modern day thriller films have advanced in using different types of sound track and only building suspense when it is necessary. In Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn 2011) the director uses Nightcall by Vincent Belorgey which is a pop soundtrack to introduce the character. Modern days thriller films also include silence before something bad happens to build up the tension.
