 Phonics (know the sound the letters make) › C-a-t = cat  High frequency words (commonly used words in English)  Tricky words (words you cannot ‘sound out’ e.g. one, two …)  Reading Time Book (new story each week) › Please do not complete classwork at home.  Reading a-z (password given by teachers)

 Letter formation and handwriting  Types of Writing › Recount (weekend) › Procedural (instructions/recipe) › Narrative writing (story)  Independent writing (without help)  Writing/copy book

 New words given every 2 weeks  Spelling Assessment on Thursday (2 weeks)  Spelling tests need to be signed by parents and returned to the teacher.  Grade 2 › c-v-c word patterns › Challenge words  Grade 3 › 10 spelling words linked to phonics (5 easy, 5 harder) › 5 high frequency words › Challenge words

 Phonics › One letter, one sound › Diagraphs -two letters making one sound e.g. sh, th, ch  Blending –putting together  Segmenting –breaking down  More difficult sound patterns › e.g. ‘ y ’ makes an i or ee sound at the end of a word e.g. my and happy

 Following class direction –TEACHER  Listening –to teacher and each other  Story Time (use CD at home)  Shared experiences › weekend, family time, holidays  Science › discuss science topics

 › ALL homework and classwork is outlined via each grade level’s page.  Reading Time Book – read new story each week at home.  Activities – complete activity pages as directed by the class teacher.  Worksheet – sometimes additional worksheets are given (see parent overview)  Spellings – learn or revise each night in preparation for two week assessment.
