Martinez-Mir A, Zlotogorski A, Gordon D, Petukhova L, Mo J, Gilliam TC, Londono D, Haynes C, Ott J, Hordinsky M, Nanova K, Norris D, Price V, Duvic M, Christiano AM: Genomewide scan for linkage reveals evidence of several susceptibility loci for alopecia areata. Am J Hum Genet 2007, 80: Coverage - Enumeration & Chronology PROBLEM [Volume 80, Issue 2 (February 2007)]

v : no: 1-6 v : no: 1-6 Coverage - Enumeration & Chronology IDEAL

Coverage - Enumeration & Chronology SOLUTION or WHY ONIX SOH 1.1? Automated updates of serials online holdings coverage data from: – KnowledgeBase providers – Publishers / aggregators Sufficient level of enumeration and chronology Reduced manual workload at library end Update holding statements in OPACs / ERMs

ONIX SOH ONline Information eXchange of Serials Online Holdings A standard for communicating information about online serial resources holdings Communication via XML messages SOH sources – examples: – Knowledgebase providers / holdings update systems – Publishers / hosting services – Publication access management services (PAMS) – Subscription agencies SOH targets – examples: – Library OPACs – ERMs – OpenURL link servers

ONIX SOH 1.1 Version 1.1 (June 2007) includes the “ONIX for Serials Coverage Statement” Coverage Statement: – XML structure Included in ONIX for Serials messages – Both enumeration and chronology expressed – Simple or complex “statement of serials coverage” includes e.g.: The holdings of a particular serial version by a library The coverage of a particular serial version supplied by an online content hosting system The coverage of a particular serial version included in a subscription or offering Source: ONIX for Serials Coverage Statement - Version 0.9 (Revised January 2008)

TDNet Implementation - ONIX SOH 1.1 TDNet KnowledgeBase Managed content – Serials: + 200,000 unique journal titles – industry largest + 24,000 publishers + 1,000 aggregators, databases, collections + 13,500 free sources

TDNet Implementation - ONIX SOH 1.1 TDNet KnowledgeBase Data elements – serials; examples: Internal identifiers Industry identifiers – print ISSN / e-ISSN Access level - online / print only / restrictions Publisher, aggregators, vendors URLs – journal / article level Table of contents Coverage: – Online coverage – standard & customer’s private Chronology - by date New: Enumeration - by volume, issue,

TDNet Implementation - ONIX SOH 1.1 Since 2007 – vast efforts to collect serials enumeration data – Publishers – Aggregators – Vendors 2008 – 2009; working with EDItEUR to develop ONIX SOH 1.1 messages according to v. 1.1 schema June 2009: – Major publishers / vendors information include both enumeration & chronology data Examples – Elsevier, Springer, Wiley-BW, T&F, Sage, – Acceptance by EDItEUR – TDNet “Holdings Manager” service available in ONIX SOH 1.1

Examples Coverage Statement

Relationship with MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data (MFHD) ONIX coverage is nearly analogous to the Enumeration and Chronology fields ( ) of MARC 21 holdings data format ONIX coverage statement may be re-expressed in MARC 21 without loss of information Not all MARC 21 statements can be expressed completely within an ONIX coverage statement.

Cytotechnology Journal – Online Coverage Statement Online coverage start Online coverage end Enumeration Chronology Holdings Description for: Cytotechnology, v.1:no.1:(1987:Oct.)-v.59:no.1:(2009:Jan.) Corresponds with MARC & 863 tags: $8 1 $a v. $u 2 $v r $i (year) $j (month) $w m $8 1.1 $a 1-59 $c 1-1 $i $j 10-1

TDNet Implementation - ONIX SOH 1.1 Further action items: Extend enumeration data availability to more titles and access options Work with ERM providers / libraries on successful implementation of SOH 1.1

How can ONIX SOH Version 1.1 be useful to libraries? Credit: Linda Miller and Rebecca Guenther, Library of Congress, ALA Midwinter 2009, Denver By expressing complete enumeration and chronology in a communication format that could be understood in MARC21 based systems. By providing a sufficient level of enumeration and chronology detail to be useful to patrons with known item searches that wish to match citation information in hand to the library’s electronic holdings. By supplying an unambiguous expression of holdings that can be parsed by machine and used for link resolution. By providing means to express and update holdings statements in such a way that reduces the workload in libraries since ONIX SOH can automatically update/replace serials holdings statements that appear in the library’s OPAC and/or in their electronic resource management system (ERMS).
