Caffeine By: Michael Marte

What is Caffeine? Textbook Definition A crystalline compound that is found especially in tea and coffee plants and is a stimulant of the central nervous system. Caffeine IS A DRUG

Caffeine in the world At least 68 million Americans drink three cups of coffee every single day. Some 30 million Americans drink five or more cups of coffee every single day. Over 21 million Americans drink six or more cups of coffee every day. It’s believed that some 3 out of 4 regular caffeine users are actually addicted to the substance.

Caffeine Symptoms Caffeine can give you the jitters Can give you a headache but can also relieve one If you have trouble sleeping or suffer from anxiety, caffeine will probably make matters worse If you don’t get your usual caffeine you will fell irattable

Caffeine Symptoms(cont.) Caffeine encourages acid production in your stomach. That may result in a case of heartburn Caffeine is a diuretic, so it makes you urinate more often than usual. Great amounts of caffeine can cause you to lose to much water Caffeine can temporarily raise blood pressure. That could be a problem if you suffer from hypertension

Caffeine Symptoms(cont.) Caffeine can make your heart beat a bit faster. If you have heart-related problems, ask your doctor if its safe for you to have caffeine Caffeine interferes with how your body uses calcium When you are pregnant, caffeine travels through your bloodstream into the placenta, which can affect your baby Caffeine may be a factor in fibrocystic breast disease Too much caffeine may make it harder for you to become pregnant

Caffeine Overdose Symptoms Caffeine overdose may cause confusion or hallucinations A caffeine overdose may lead to diarrhea A caffeine overdose can make muscles twitchy

Withdrawal Symptoms Headache A caffeine headache usually starts behind the eyes and then moves up the front of the head. Sleepiness This just isn’t your normal tiredness, this is sitting up straight but still can’t keep your eyes open tiredness. Irritability Everyone and everything gets on your last nerve. It’s best just to lock yourself in your room during this stage. Lethargy Forget about productivity at this stage because you’ll be unmotivated to do anything. Constipation Caffeine stimulates the bowel, so without its daily dose the colon gets a little cranky too.

Withdrawal Symptoms(cont.) Depression Caffeine withdrawal can take away all hope for living. Temporary blues are one thing, but if you already struggle with depression this could be a big issue. Muscle Pain/Stiffness If you normally have some caffeine prior to exercise then during caffeine withdrawal you could feel as though your muscles have weights strapped to them. Lack of Concentration Forget school, studying, brain surgery, or jet engine repair during this stage of withdrawal. Flu-like symptoms Stuffy nose, blocked sinuses, and even vomiting have been reported by people withdrawing from caffeine. Insomnia Some people actually can’t sleep when going through caffeine withdrawal.

How to quit caffeine There are two most common methods the Cold Turkey Method and Weaning Methood

The Cold Turkey Method With this method a person simply ceases to consume caffeine. While this can be the fastest way to detox, it does come with a price. Pros: The fastest way to detox from caffeine. A realization of caffeine’s influence on body functioning. Cons: Can produce severe caffeine withdrawal syptoms. A person may be out of commission for 1 to 3 days. Can lead to loss in productivity. Produces more of a tendency to give up.

The Weaning Method With this method, instead of quitting caffeine all at once, the person gradually reduces the amount of caffeine he/she is consuming daily. Pros: Withdrawal symptoms are much less severe. Most people can continue to function and be productive. Mild to no caffeine headache to deal with. Less shocking to the system. Cons: Can take longer to detox depending on the beginning daily dose amount. Requires tracking caffeine and being intentional about what’s being consumed and how much.

Advantages of no caffeine Lower Blood Pressure Quitting coffee or caffeine can lower your blood pressure and keep your heart from working as hard. Better Sleep Caffeine can greatly reduce the amount and quality of sleep. 2 Drinking coffee or energy drinks too late in the day can interfere with getting to sleep since the half- life of caffeine is 4-6 hours. Better Mood Caffeine alters the mood. Many report being grumpy until they’ve had their morning coffee and others feel lethargic when the caffeine begins to wear off in the afternoon. Quitting can even out the ups and downs. Decreased Anxiety Many people report that caffeine increases their anxiety levels. Quitting coffee or caffeine can make you feel less anxious, especially if you are prone to anxiety issues. Fewer Headaches Any alteration in your normal daily caffeine consumption can result in a caffeine withdrawal headache. Caffeine can also be a migraine trigger. Go to for morehttp://

Yes or No to Caffeine I do not know, it really is debatable. Caffeine has its ups and its downs. Caffeine can make you more focused but it can also make you jittery and anxious. I say who cares I am not a frequent caffeine user so this doesn’t apply to me. But those who are frequent users I think should stop using it so much but don’t make my opinion change your mind it is all up to you.
