Wednesday, Nov 5 Lesson The Distributive Property

Objective: To use Distributive Property to rewrite algebraic expressions.

The Distributive Property A term can be a single number or variable or numbers and variables multiplied together and separated by addition or subtraction. e.g. 4x + 4 This expression has 2 terms.

The Distributive Property A coefficient is the numerical factor of a term that contains a variable. e.g. 4x + 4 In this expression there is only one term that has a variable and the coefficient is 4.

The Distributive Property A term without a variable is called a constant. e.g. 4x + 4 Constant.

The Distributive Property Like terms are terms that contain the same variable. Only like terms can be added or subtracted. e.g. 4x x Like terms

The Distributive Property Distributive Property – To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parenthesis. e.g. 4 · (3 + 1) = 4 · · 1= = 16 e.g. 4 · (a + 1) = 4 · a + 4 · 1 or 4a + 4

The Distributive Property Find using the Distributive Property 1 9 (4 3 )

The Distributive Property Find using the Distributive Property 1 9 (4 3 ) 1 Can we write 4 3 as an expression?

The Distributive Property Find using the Distributive Property 1 9 (4 3 ) 1 Remember that 4 3 = 4 + 3

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) Using the Distributive Property to Simplify Expressions Step 1 – Multiply the factor outside the parenthesis by the first term inside the parenthesis.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 Step 1 – Multiply the factor outside the parenthesis by the first term inside the parenthesis.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 Step 2 – Bring the operation inside the parenthesis across to the new expression.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 + Step 2 – Bring the operation inside the parenthesis across to the new expression.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 + Step 3 – Multiply the factor outside the parenthesis by the second term inside the parenthesis.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 + Step 3 – Multiply the factor outside the parenthesis by the second term inside the parenthesis.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = 36 + Step 4 – Simplify and perform the operation, if possible.

The Distributive Property Find 9 (4 ) 9 (4 + ) = Step 4 – Simplify and perform the operation, if possible. This is the work to be shown on tonight’s homework.
