Users typically use desktop software to receive, read and respond to messages. Advantages of are that people cannot intercept them and they are sent easily and can be received quickly. Disadvantages are that only files can be sent. Anyone can also send an to anyone else if they know or guess a specific address. Viruses can be sent to another persons computer too. Instant messaging Instant messaging enables a conversation to take place instantly online. More than one person than also be involved in the conversation. Advantages of instant messaging is that only people you have in your addresses can be involved in your conversation, making it safer than chat rooms. Disadvantages are that viruses can be sent and that you have to be online to take part in the conversation.

Types of software needed  You will need communications software to allow your modem and PC to access the Internet.  You will need VT-100 emulation to allow for full screen cursor movement. This will enable your screen to do some minimal, but required, text highlighting in certain Internet applications.  Commercial software such as Procomm Plus for DOS or Procomm Plus for Windows are two excellent candidates.
