ACM NDC Report Stu Zweben ACM Ed Council August, 2015

Highlights of this year’s activity New platform (Peerfocus – same used now by CRA Taulbee Survey) Change in platform delayed launch of this year’s data collection process Similar number of academic units responded compared with 2014 Fewer programs represented by this year’s respondents Report completed in time for publication in September Inroads User satisfaction survey of respondents

NDC Respondents 158 Departments 38% public, 62% private institutions 27% master’s granting, 73% non-master’s-granting 248 total bachelor’s programs, 43 master’s programs BachMast CS CE 7 2 IS 43 4 IT 25 5 SE 12 5

NDC Results NDC departments are more diverse than Taulbee departments Bachelor’s degrees Women – 17.9% NDC vs 14.7% Taulbee URM – 14.0% NDC vs 12.2% Taulbee (Black, Hispanic, Amer. Indian) <=MEDIA INTEREST Among “majorities”, NDC departments graduated fewer Asians (12.1% vs 20.8%) and more Whites (67.2% vs 56.7%) Faculty Women – NDC higher than Taulbee at all ranks Ethnicity – NDC > Taulbee for African-American, Hispanic and White Taulbee > NDC for Asian, Non-residents CS bachelor’s enrollment increases of 13.6% among units responding both years, but decreases in IS and IT

Plans for Coming Year Review satisfaction survey responses and make changes as appropriate Conduct survey in fall instead of winter Departments can finish by end of fall semester or, if more convenient, submit data during break after semester. Can publish results earlier (e.g., June instead of Sept) if ok with Inroads Begin to incorporate trends (i.e., longer than just comparison with previous year) in published report Consider incorporating “individually selected peer group” capability

Issues General Reaching more departments Contributing to needs of “enrollment boom” study Obtaining data or proxy information about retention Succession planning From Respondents Time required to complete survey Improve instructions for some questions Are we asking for information that is difficult to obtain?
