Measurable Outcome The York Chapter Basketball Officials will be able to: Differentiate between the Legal Contact/Illegal Contact

Legal/Illegal Contact (4-24) Legal –Extend the arms vertically above the shoulders Need not be lowered to avoid contact –Use of hands to reach to block or slap the ball Dribbler Shooter Holding ball (accidentally hitting the hand) –Hold the hands and arms in front of the face or body for protection Take Charge Set Screen Recoil method

Legal/Illegal Contact (4-24) Illegal –Use hands, arms, hips, shoulders to force way through a screen –Hands on opponent to inhibit the freedom of movement of the opponent –Extend the arms fully or partially in a position other than vertical so that the freedom of movement is hindered (Arm Bar) –Swing arms and elbows excessively

Incidental Contact (4-26) Definition: –Mere fact that contact occurs does not constitute a foul. –10 players are moving rapidly in a limited area, some contact is certain to occur. –Opponents are in equally favorable positions to perform normal defensive or offensive movements should not be considered illegal, even though the contact may be severe. Ex. Screens
