US determination to be the best in technology resulted in ARPANET 1950s: In response to the Russian launch of Sputnik, President Eisenhower formed ARPA (Advanced Research Project Agency) to ensure that the US never again lagged in technology. 1960s: US Defense agency contracts with BBN (Bolt, Beranek & Newman) to create ARPANET, a network with many interconnected nodes: Four major universities connected to one computer network Researchers able to share papers, scientific studies, and emergency communications

ARPANET is the predecessor of the Internet In 2008, the Internet had over 450,000 nodes. ARPANET in 1974: a discrete, countable number of nodes in the US, England, and Norway. What do you think a “node” is?

Customers connect to the Internet via ISPs

TCP/IP communication protocols were adopted as standards in the 1980s In order to communicate, all nodes on the Internet need to use the same protocols, or standards, when they connect to each other. In the early days, not all nodes could interconnect because multiple protocols were used. In 1973, TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol) was designed. TCP/IP was mandated for ARPANET in 1983, and then adopted by the US government and large companies. TCP/IP is the standard protocol used throughout the Internet today.

The World Wide Web (WWW) was born in 1991 Tim Berners-Lee is the inventor of the WWW. The project began in Europe to enable physicists to share data, news, and documentation. A web page launched in August 1991 introduced the WWW to the public. From the outset, the intent was to spread the web to other areas and have gateway servers for other data.

The Internet and the World Wide Web are not synonymous The Internet is a system of interwoven networks that enable computers and smartphones to connect to each other to exchange information. The World Wide Web allows people to interact with each other on the Internet. It introduces three technologies that make it easier for users to find and share information among the connected networks: Uniform resource locators (URLs) Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) Hypertext Transport Protocol (HTTP)

Can you explain how the Internet works? Can you explain how the Internet works in one or two sentences?

The Internet is constantly changing and growing E-commerce Online banking Research News Instant messaging Social networking File sharing, including pictures and videos What do you think the next trend will be? How would your life be different without the Internet?

Timeline: 45 years of the Internet 1970 — First five nodes of ARPANET — Term Internet is born. England and Norway connect to ARPANET. Computers connected via TCP protocol — Internet’s 1,000 hosts convert en masse to TCP/IP — World Wide Web is born — 600 websites, 2 million hosts, Netscape browser — 10,000 WWW sites, 3 million hosts, 10,000 newsgroups. 2000s — Social networks, voice & video on the Internet.
