History of Musical Therapy Musical Therapy has been around for ages now Earliest Reference Early 1800s writings on the therapeutic value of music appeared in two medical essays Early Association 1903, Eva Augusta Vescelius founded the National Society of Musical Therapeutics 1941, Harriet Ayer Seymour founded the National Foundation of Music Therapy organizations contributed the first journals, books, and educational courses on music therapy, they unfortunately were not able to develop an organized clinical profession. Now American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) was formed in 1998 as a merger between the National Association for Music Therapy (NAMT) and the American Association for Music Therapy (AAMT). intellectual home of and serves over 5,000 music therapists

Some studies the effects of music that help stress:

EMPLOYING THE HEALTH BELIEF MODEL TO EXAMINE STRESS MANAGEMENT AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS: There were 485 college students that participated this study. That complete reliable survey for the overall frequency of effective acute stress management techniques. The results were music, exercising, and take deep breaths. Using effective acute stress management techniques. Techniques different significantly based on level of perceived benefits, and barriers.

Reflection of college students about the use of Classical relaxing music in student lounge: They all wanted the music to continue in the student lounge and they all recommend it will be useful to other institutions as well. The researchers may infer that this type of music relaxes the students and creates an environment that could be beneficial to college students while they relax, review, read or research. This was a research study that 61 respondents was involved (20 male and 41 females). All those respondents was students of Systems Plus College Foundation and the subject General Psychology. They were average of 18 yrs old. Based on n this research all of the responders that was with the study found that they all liked music. They all want the music to continue this study. They would recommend it be useful. The researchers found out the types of music relaxes students and create the environment that could be beneficial of college students.

The Mozart Effect The Idea of the mozart effect began in 1993 when Francis Rauscher and others released the article “Music and Spatial Task Performance.” They made the claim that after listening to a piano sonata for two pianos by Mozart, your spatial reasoning skills would increase. Continued study into the Mozart Effect showed that listening to Mozart did much more than just improve spatial reasoning. In the article, “The Mozart Effect: Tracking the evolution of a Scientific Legend,” it goes on to explain that the idea of Mozart Effect has been diffused into the american culture. I believe that playing music at a young age creates stronger pathways between both sides of the brain. This benefit of music can carry over into stress.

Muscle Relaxation and Music In the article “Effects of Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Music on Stress as Measured by Finger Temperature Response” by Virginia Kibler and Mark Rider discus results of a test on muscle relaxation and how it affects stress. They used progressive muscle relaxation techniques test how it effects stress. They also used music as another test, and then they tested it together. The best results came from the test where they were only listening to classical music but not by very much. They gauged the relaxation of each subject by measuring skin temperature. The higher the increase in temperature, the more relaxed they became. Each test produced significant results, but compared to each other, none of them were significantly higher.
