Using Social Networks in Education: Pros and Cons Should You “Friend” Students in Facebook? Could You use a Social Network as a Course Management Tool? Could You Use A Social Network as a Course Discussion Tool? Could Your Class Create Facebook Apps?

Things Not to Say on Facebook

Third-Party Web-Based Social Networks are: Social! According to Educause Center for Applied Research Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2008, only 5.5 percent of 22,207 students from 44 colleges and universities used Social Network Sites to communicate with instructors about course content. (ECAR 89)

Final Thoughts Not every technology is necessarily appropriate for the classroom…and that is O.K. More important that instructors are aware of the various ways students are using technology and communicating.
