Fundamentals of Color By Mr. Rider

Color Perception Growth Nature Life-Giving Money Color studies have shown it to be the easiest color to live with

Color Perception Expansive Serene Reliable ▫“True Blue” Associated with sky and water Can be used to convey sadness or depression ▫“feeling blue”

Color Perception Festive Exuberant Romantic Danger Blood Imagination Passion

Color Perception Active Appetizing Hot Sunsets Seasonal changes Sweet & spicy foods Exotic foods

Additive Color Model The RGB model is called "additive" because a combination of the three pure colors red, green, and blue "adds up" to white light. The MEDIUM for this color model is Light.

The Subtractive Color Model AKA: CMYK Color, Process Color, 4-Color The CMYK model works by partially or entirely masking certain colors on the typically white background (that is, absorbing particular wavelengths of light). Such a model is called subtractive because inks “subtract” brightness from white.

Color Terms Hue Saturation Value Tint Tone Shade Monochromatic

Hue Fancy name for the color you are using

Saturation The purity of a color Pure hues that are fully saturated are at their highest level of intensity Removing saturation from a hue moves it closer to gray

Value Lightness or Darkness of an image

Tint Adding White to a pure hue ▫Makes hues appear brighter  Red Pink  Purple Lavendar  Yellow Citron  Blue Azure ▫Adding lots of white yields pastel colors

Color Wheel Primary Colors: Red Blue Yellow Complementary Colors Green Orange Purple Primary colors are located across from their complements on the color wheel

Monochromatic A single color mixed with tints, shades, or tones to create impression of multiple colors

Analogous Color Scheme based on colors that are next to each other on the color wheel

Triad (Split Complement) A color scheme that includes a main color and the two colors on each side of its complementary (opposite) color on the color wheel.
