Thinking about waste and recycling for a happy eco-Christmas!

What is waste? Why is it a problem? Santa’s top tips to reduce, reuse and recycle A new recycling song!

Waste is anything that we throw away in our bins - such as cans, paper, vegetables, glass and plastic, food and lots more. Can everyone think of something that they threw away today?

We all make a lot of waste especially at Christmas, when we have extra paper, cards and lots of packaging We also waste a lot of food. 7 million tonnes of food and drink is thrown away every year in the UK (that weighs the same as 1,200,000 elephants !) And more than half of this could have been eaten... So what could we do to help?

So how can we reduce our waste? – Wrap presents in different ways to reduce wrapping paper – Make sure you eat up all your food at meal times – Love your left overs! – Make your own Christmas cards and presents – Put your bin on a diet in the New Year by throwing less away! Click the bin to watch a video about wrapping presents with crisp packets!!

How can we reuse? – Make your own Christmas decorations – Take bags with you when you go shopping so you don’t need a new ones – Make your own paper chains from old wrapping paper or wallpaper – Get your gifts from charity shops – great for bargains!

How we can recycle? – Recycle Rudolph’s (and your) mince pie wrappers and all your cans, plastic, bottles, tubs and trays too. – Recycle wrapping paper and Christmas cards – Take any glass bottles and jars to a bottle bank and have a smashing time! – Did you know that you can recycle cartons, aerosols, pots and pans and books in your recycling bin at home too? – Are there any other things you can recycle ?

Bin men come to collect to-oo- morrow Time to sort out the rubbish All plastic and the car-ard-board Must be sep-ar-ay-ay-ted Gonna take shopping my re-us-a-ble ba-ag Say no to plastic, we all know it’s bad Don’t make more waste, reuse some more Compost fruit you have left-o-over Reduce, re-use, and don’t forget No, don’t forget Re-cy-cle, re-cy-cle Can’t throw away anymore Re-cy-cle, re-cy-cle Show the world that yo-ou care I know that Recycling’s the way Let us keep it up I want my planet to stay the sa-ame

and have a Happy Green Christmas !
