“ Miwon Kwon ’ s definition of the second phase of site-specific art involves the critique of institutions by the very artists who depend upon these institutions for the display and the possible sale of their work. This paper will argue that this type of site-specific artistic practice is the most socially responsible that an artist can engage in today because 1. It makes use of the agency that is particular to the artist, and, 2. It remains consistent with the practice and field of art itself. ”

“ Miwon Kwon ’ s definition of the second phase of site-specific art involves the critique of institutions by the very artists who depend upon these institutions for the display and the possible sale of their work. This paper will argue, however, that this type of site-specific artistic practice is no longer effective at creating a socially responsible, critical intervention thanks to its appropriation by museums and galleries which has transformed this practice into just another artistic style. ”
