LEARNING TO MANAGE CHAPTER 5

OBJECTIVES DISCUSS REASONS FOR THE INFLUENCES ON PRIORITIES. EXPLAIN THE BENEFITS OF SETTING GOALS AND THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GOALS. IDENTIFY RESOURCES THAT HELP PEOPLE ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS. COMPARE STRATEGIES FOR MAKING THE MOST OF RESOURCES. OUTLINE THE FOUR STEPS OF THE MANAGEMENT PROCESS.

KEY TERMS PRIORITIZE SHORT-TERM GOAL LONG-TERM GOAL RESOURCEFUL CONTINGENCY PLANS GOALS FIXED GOALS FLEXIBLE GOALS

ESTABLISHING PRIORITIES YOU DECIDE WHICH GOALS AND ACTIVITIES ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU. IDENTIFYING YOU PRIORITIES GIVES YOU DIRECTIONS TO FOLLOW AS YOU LEARN TO MANAGE YOUR LIFE. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GOOD MANAGEMENT SKILLS?

NEEDS AND WANTS TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT YOUR NEEDS AND WANTS. (YES THEY ARE DIFFERENT) NEEDS ARE ITEMS THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR SURVIVAL. WANTS ARE ITEMS THAT YOU DESIRE. LIST THREE NEEDS AND THREE WANTS.

ROLE OF VALUES ALSO EXAMINE YOUR VALUES – THE BELIEFS THAT GUIDE YOUR LIFE. THEY HELP YOU DETERMINE WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT, LESS IMPORTANT, AND UNIMPORTANT. HELP STEER YOU TOWARD WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU AND NOT IN YOUR BEST INTEREST.

DIFFERING PRIORITIES PRIORITIES ARE DIFFERENT FROM PERSON TO PERSON. THEY CHANGE FROM TIME TO TIME. RIGHT NOW YOU MIGHT BE CONCERNED ABOUT A JOB, CAR, COLLEGE. IN 5 YEARS FROM NOW YOU MAY BE CONCERNED ABOUT A HOME, FAMILY ETC. WHY DO PRIORITIES DIFFER FROM PERSON TO PERSON?

SETTING GOALS ONCE YOU KNOW YOUR PRIORITIES, YOU CAN SET APPROPRIATE GOALS. GOAL – SOMETHING THAT YOU CONSCIOUSLY AIM TO ACHIEVE AND ARE WILLING TO PLAN AND WORK FOR. THEY ARE PERSONAL AND DIFFER FROM ONE PERSON TO ANOTHER.

SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS SHORT-TERM GOAL – SOMETHING YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH SOON (0-6 MONTHS) LONG-TERM GOAL – IS SOMETHING YOU PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH FURTHER IN THE FUTURE (6+ MONTHS) GIVE EXAMPLES OF SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS (THREE EACH) START THINKING OF WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU!! IN 6 MONTHS, IN 5 YEARS, IN 10 YEARS, IN 20 YEARS.

FIXED AND FLEXIBLE GOALS FIXED GOAL – ONE THAT CAN ONLY BE MET AT A CERTAIN TIME. FLEXIBLE GOAL – HAS NO TIME FRAME.

AIMING FOR SUCCESS CREATE A PLAN!!!!! ANALYZE YOUR GOALS – IS IT SOMETHING YOU NEED OR WANT. DOES IT GO ALONG WITH YOUR VALUES? BE REALISTIC – IS IT SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH? BE SPECIFIC – STATE GOALS IN TERMS THAT YOU CAN MEASURE WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE ACCOMPLISHED.

AIMING FOR SUCCESS CONT. PUT GOALS IN WRITING – WRITE IT DOWN!!! REMEMBER IT! FOLLOW THROUGH – IF IT IS IMPORTANT MAKE SURE THAT YOU FOLLOW THROUGH AND ACCOMPLISH IT. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS?

IDENTIFYING YOUR RESOURCES RESOURCE – SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN USE TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL. HUMAN RESOURCE – INCLUDE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, CREATIVITY, TIME, ENERGY, FAMILY AND FRIENDS. MATERIAL RESOURCES – PHYSICAL RESOURCES YOU USE TO ACCOMPLISH YOUR GOALS COMMUNITY RESOURCES – THEY INCLUDE FACILITIES SCHOOLS, MUSEUMS, LIBRARIES, HOSPITALS, PARKS, AND THEATRES. NATURAL RESOURCE – FOUND IN NATURE, AIR, WATER, SOIL, PLANT, AND MINERALS. GIVES EXAMPLES OF THESE RESOURCES.

USING RESOURCES WISELY EXPANDING RESOURCES – SOME RESOURCES THAT YOU HAVE CAN BE ENHANCED. FOR EXAMPLE, LEARNING A NEW SKILL, OR LEARNING MORE ABOUT AN EXISTING ONE. CONSERVING RESOURCES –SOME RESOURCES ARE FIXED. YOU NEED TO MAKE THE MOST OF WHAT YOU HAVE. EXAMPLE: TIME EXCHANGING RESOURCES – TRADING SKILLS WITH SOMEONE. SUBSTITUTING RESOURCES – RESOURCES THAT ARE PLENTIFUL ARE SWITCHED FOR THOSE THAT ARE NOT. YOU HAVE TIME AND SKILL, BUT NOT MONEY AND YOUR GRANDMOTHERS BIRTHDAY IS COMING UP. YOU DECIDE TO CROCHET A SCARF.

RESOURCES HOW MIGHT YOU USE A NATURAL RESOURCE TO ACHIEVE A GOAL? GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF A WAY YOU COULD EXPAND A RESOURCE. GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF A WAY TO CONSERVE MATERIAL RESOURCES. WHEN WOULD A PERSON CHOOSE TO SUBSTITUTE RESOURCES?

THE MANAGEMENT PROCESS SYSTEMATIC WAY OF WORKING TOWARD YOUR GOALS 1.PLANNING 2.ORGANIZING 3.IMPLEMENTING 4.EVALUATING

PLANNING IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, YOU PLAN TO FAIL. IDENTIFY YOUR GOALS ESTABLISH PRIORITIES ASSESS YOUR RESOURCES CREATE A TASK LIST THEN DEVELOP A CONTINGENCY PLAN – ALTERNATIVE COURSE OF ACTION

ORGANIZING AFTER YOU PLAN GET ORGANIZED CREATE A SCHEDULE- HOW MUCH TIME WILL YOU NEED TO PERFORM THE TASK GATHER YOUR RESOURCES – WHAT RESOURCES WILL YOU NEED?

IMPLEMENTING CARRY OUT YOUR PLAN!!! MAKE IT HAPPEN!! “GET ‘ER DONE!”

EVALUATING HOW DID YOU DO? DID YOU GET DONE WHAT YOU WANTED TO ACCOMPLISH? ARE YOU ON THE RIGHT PATH TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL?

ACTIVITY IN YOUR GROUP YOU ARE GOING TO PLAN A FAMILY EVENT. YOU ARE TO ASSIGN AN AGE AND “ROLE” TO EACH MEMBER. YOU WILL WORK TOGETHER TO PLAN THE FOLLOWING EVENTS: A VACATION A BIRTHDAY PARTY REDECORATING A FAMILY ROOM SPRING CLEANING
