18 th GIST Meeting 14 th –16 th May 2003 Ground Segment (GGSPS) Report 1 GERB Ground Segment B.C.Stewart RAL

18 th GIST Meeting 14 th –16 th May 2003 Ground Segment (GGSPS) Report 2 Topics Processing System EUMETSAT interface RMIB interface User access Operations Meetings/ management

18 th GIST Meeting 14 th –16 th May 2003 Ground Segment (GGSPS) Report 3 Processing System Status Processing software (now at V12): Handling of new instrument modes Improvements in robustness Geolocation tuning Ongoing population of engineering products Gains and offsets added to L15N products Preparation for inclusion of Integrating Sphere data Preparation for re-processing Updated SEVIRI header selection algorithm Problems (INGRES, Data Reception) Future Work

18 th GIST Meeting 14 th –16 th May 2003 Ground Segment (GGSPS) Report 4 INGRES Problem with INGRES database, started 26th Feb, – caused GGSPS components to “hang” – frequency increased up to ~once per day – on some occasions led to loss of raw data Changes made: – database re-configured: didn’t fix it (frequency reduced?) – additional diagnostic logging in GGSPS software – updated GGSPS messaging to prevent loss of raw data due to system hang Problem not seen since (> 2 weeks smooth running) –We still do not understand this problem…

18 th GIST Meeting 14 th –16 th May 2003 Ground Segment (GGSPS) Report 5 Other problems Data Reception: “real data” problems – detection of corrupted data: packet checksum – handling of instrument ‘transitional’ mode changes –Upgrades to DR planned for the near future to address both of these problems Minor problems generating “pseudo SEVIRI header” files

18 th GIST Meeting 14 th –16 th May 2003 Ground Segment (GGSPS) Report 6 Future work Robustness: improve error handling, make the system more “driveable” to facilitate hand-over to an operator Product Processing: product validation, tuning geolocation, complete population of Eng products Level 2 monthly averaging: coding not started Re-Ordering to fill in data gaps (breaks in transmission from Eum, GGSPS outages) User interface: web pages, product documentation

18 th GIST Meeting 14 th –16 th May 2003 Ground Segment (GGSPS) Report 7 EUMETSAT – RAL interface Formal tests with EUMETSAT – line basically works. Missing packets – still few 10’s / day cause still not known, comparison planned with UMARF, GGSPS and EUMETSAT interest. Longer gaps understood (EUMETSAT/ GGSPS system problems, GERB telemetry switched off) Leased line appears to have behaved faultlessly once initial problems sorted out EGSE currently being used to provide an ‘online’ pipeline for remaining functional/ calibration tests

18 th GIST Meeting 14 th –16 th May 2003 Ground Segment (GGSPS) Report 8 RMIB interface Formal tests not complete but product interchange works. 15 min files transferred in typically <10 seconds

18 th GIST Meeting 14 th –16 th May 2003 Ground Segment (GGSPS) Report 9 User access URL : Website operational and being used by ICSTM, Reading … Initial access not password protected, product and catalogue access password protected –Catalogue searches based on date and product type individual file download from search results multiple (<=600) file download from search results –Bulk download of latest day’s data (in 6hr blocks) –Basic read/plot software available Engineering/ performance plotting system in place and accessible – daily plots of parameters, long term trends. Evolving in consultation with ICSTM and instrument builders. Background information: product user guides in progress “Discussion forum” link to be added

18 th GIST Meeting 14 th –16 th May 2003 Ground Segment (GGSPS) Report 10 Operations - evolution EUMETSAT-ICSTM/RAL Interface Control Document –being updated (report format evolution, points of contact, GGSPS & GOT usernames) EUMETSAT reports –Commanding, Related SEVERI functions, Line anomalies GOT functions –Transfer RAL => ICSTM (commands files, tables) Flight Operations Manual (FOM) –To be updated in light of experience (limits, SAFEing function) EEPROM –Nominal tables uploaded

18 th GIST Meeting 14 th –16 th May 2003 Ground Segment (GGSPS) Report 11 Meetings Weekly GGSPS technical (RAL internal) –actions, system status/ planned upgrades, current problems eg INGRES, any new issues, periodically review Change Requests, NCRs –Project Scientist 4-6 weekly GERB operations (RAL, ICSTM, RMIB, LU) –Reports/ plans, GGSPS, Project Scientist, GOT, RMIB (includes analysis and anomalies) –EUMETSAT issues –Commissioning activities –Minutes and actions –For the future CAL/ VAL or another forum?
