Walking School Bus Washington Elementary Vancouver, Washington

Overview The Walking School Bus Program was developed in a response to high rates of tardiness and absences Washington Elementary is an all walking school, as all children live within half a mile. The Safe Routes to Schools model was used to develop the program Program development relied heavily on assistance with implementation from Clark County Public Health

Overview (continued) Practice -the key element is to provide a safe way for children to get to school on time emphasis is on exercise and a healthy breakfast so all are ready to learn At the onset of the program tardiness decreased by 49% Partnership –Faith Based and Public Health Residual benefits have been positive mentoring relationships for the students

Challenges Challenge we face are staffing the route, funding, behavioral issues We partner with faith based groups, community health coalitions, and local businesses to recruit volunteers We continue to promote the program in an effort to recruit parent volunteers Funding to replace worn out equipment is difficult to obtain

Challenges In dealing with behavioral issues we work with the school counselor, principal and parents At times we have been in the position where a child has lost the privilege to walk on WSB for safety reasons

Lessons Learned Training volunteers is critical particularly in dealing discipline issues Have a good relationship with local police and city employees Training school district security is also an important part of maintaining a successful program Utilize volunteers to recruit Great opportunity for leadership development in older grades

Wrap Up & Questions Moderator facilitates 15 minute Q/A between audience and panel
