1. Research Topic

new issue old issue new method old method new data old data Why is it important/interesting? Need theory, or convincing arguments Why it would shed new lights into the issue? What’s the uniqueness of the data? How does it help us to learn new things ? dead end

“Make” your topic “interesting”! Appeal to a wider audience. (How others may learn from your paper?) -- local data: explore the unique institutional or social characteristics in the data => may yield results otherwise unavailable; -- local data: generalize the results for readers in other countries. bottom line…

2. Empirical Analysis regressions should be rooted in theory -- mathematical model or theory-based arguments pay attention to the model’s assumptions develop testable hypothesis be critical about causality and endogenity be careful in interpreting the results -- rigorous, based on facts; don’t over-explain NOT JUST AN ECONOMETRIC EXERCISE

3. Writing Motivation is very important. --- “Why should I care?” What’s new? Make it clear in the abstract and the introduction. Be professional. - the cover letter; - English; - layman vs. expert language. The first few pages may determine the fate.

4. Submission and others Present your work in seminars / workshops / conferences. Solicit comments. Keep your profile updated. Avoid submitting multiple papers to one journal. Referees are always right (?!). Detailed, courteous response letters.
