Did you know…… Grapefruit is part of the citrus family. Citrus fruits have a thick rind and juicy pulp inside.

The first citrus trees grew in Asia over 4000 years ago.

+ = Grapefruit History… Long ago, a pommelo and an orange accidently got their pollen mixed together. This created a hybrid fruit. What is the name of this new fruit? + =

Just the Facts A farmer in Jamaica called this new fruit grapefruit because of the way it grew in clusters, like grapes, but on a tree.

Grapefruit was grown in the Caribbean in the 1700s and was sometimes called the “forbidden fruit”.

Where Does Grapefruit Grow? Grapefruit trees like warm weather. California is perfect for growing grapefruit. California has many different farming areas with different climates. Farmers can grow grapefruit all year long.

Grapefruit has sections to make it very easy to eat. In this picture you can see the thick rind and juicy pulp.

Reasons to Eat Grapefruit It is an excellent source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, helping to keep you well. If you are feeling sick, eat some grapefruit. Grapefruit is really good for you.

More Reasons to Eat Grapefruit They are low in calories. Calories measure the energy found in food. Our bodies need energy. One pound of fat = 3500 calories.

Tasting Trio- Spicy Grapefruit Ingredients One 20 ounce can of grapefruit in 100% juice 1 pound bag of diced jicama ¼ teaspoon chili powder Preparation Drain grapefruit, reserving ¼ cup of the juice. Add all ingredients into a large mixing bowl and gently toss together. Place into bowls for each group. Each student puts 2 tablespoons in a small cup. Eat immediately.
