Oscar Quiles

 Father was Theon who was a well know scholar at the University of Alexandria.  She was born in 370 AD and died in 415 AD at the hands of an angry mob.

 Hypatia discovered that if you were to place a flat plane through a cone at different angles you would get different geometric shapes.

 Conic sections are used today for the design of car headlights the shape of the parabola helps focus the light more.  In the classroom we study conic sections as a topic.

 I wouldn’t say Hypatia was a great mathematician because she didn’t do anything that changed our life in a major way.  Hypatia was born in Alexandria, Egypt.  Euclid, Ptolemy, and Menelaus were all from Alexandria.
