Presentation transcript:

Advanced Biology Chapter 21 Lymphatic System

 Arteries  lymphatic vessels (lymphatics)

 It is a one way system back to the heart  See page 745  Vessels contain "check valves"

 Plasma and other fluids leak out of blood capillaries (interstitial fluid)  Interstitial fluid enters the lymphatics (lymphatic vessels)

 Right Lymphatic Duct:  Drains lymph from the right upper arm and right side of head and thorax

 Thoracic Duct:  Much Larger, Drains rest of body  See page 747

 Internal Jugular Vein  Subclavian Vein  At the Junction  See page 747

 Red Bone Marrow  T Lymphocytes – Killer T, Helper T  B Lymphocytes - Antibodies

Lymphoid (Lymphatic) Tissue  Body Protection  Immune Response (activate T cells)

Lymphoid (Lymphatic) Tissue  Proliferation site for lymphocytes  Ideal surveillance vantage point for lymphocytes and macrophages

Lymphoid (Lymphatic) Tissue  Embedded in connective tissue  Inguinal, axillary, cervical

Two Basic Functions:  Lymph filters – phagocytic macrophages in nodes remove and destroy microorganisms  Activate Immune System

Organs of the Lymphatic System  Lymphocyte proliferation  Filter system

Spleen  Stores breakdown products of RBCs  Erythrocyte production in fetus  Stores blood platelets

Thymus  T cell maturation, become immunocompetent. Does not directly fight antigens  Stroma secretes hormones for T cells to become immunocompetent.

Tonsils  Gather/Remove pathogens from food, air, etc in pharynx

Aggregates of Lymphoid Nodules  Peyer’s Patches, appendix?  Part of MALT – Mucosa- Associated Lymphatic Tissue  Help patrol intestines and help generate memory
