Symbiotic Relationships

 SYMBIOSIS refers to the relationship between organisms of different species that show an intimate encounter with each other.  AT LEAST one of the participating species MUST be provided a nutritional advantage.  3 TYPES of Symbiotic Relationships: 1. Parasitism 2. Commensalism 3. Mutualism

Parasitism -- VideoVideo  Interaction in which the PARASITE derives nutrients from the HOST.  This relationship is not good for the host, but great for the parasite.

Commensalism – videovideo  Interaction in between two species, where one organism benefits while the other is not harmed.  Organism benefits usually by feeding or protection

Mutualism – videovideo  Interaction between two species where BOTH organisms benefit.  They exchange food and shelter, and sometimes even protection.
