8 Comma Rules

Rule 1  Use in a list.  I enjoy camping, fishing, and hiking.

Rule 2  Use to separate independent clauses when joined with and, but, or, nor, so, & yet.  Today is going to be warm, so I am going outside to enjoy it.

Rule 3  Use a comma to separate dependent clauses from independent clauses.  When you get home, we need to go to the store.

Rule 4  Use a comma to separate a word or phrase from the rest of the sentence.  My teacher, Mrs. Breitbarth, has four daughters.

Rule 5  Use to separate a quotation from the rest of the sentence.  “We need to buy more sugar,” she said.

Rule 6  Use a comma to separate an introductory element.  Today, we are going to discuss commas.

Rule 7  Use commas to separate a city from state or country.  I live in Canton, Georgia.
